2018 John King/Butch Adams Ride

Butch Adams and John King hosted a weekend ride for their friends and for the members of the Community Draft Horse and Mule Association at John's farm near Stanton, Kentucky. The farm is located in the steep hills of eastern Kentucky and is very near the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway (DBBB). The Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway is a popular, moderately difficult, high clearance, 98 mile Four Wheel Drive route for licensed, street legal vehicles utilizing historic county roads within the Daniel Boone National Forest. It contains terrain surfaces varying between one third gravel, one third trail, and one third asphalt and traverses 4 different counties in the Red River Gorge area of eastern Kentucky. While the trails are rough in some areas, they can be negotiated by horse drawn wagons, but it can be a very bumpy ride. As we discovered, it pays to be sure that you have a spare tire for your wagon if you attempt this trail. Our Saturday group consisted of about 15 horseback riders and Butch's wagon. We rode about 15 miles of the trail and the scenery was both unique and beautiful. Temperatures were perfect for both the riders and the animals and the skies were clear and blue with a few patchy white clouds. John was an excellent host and he and his family provided us with great accommodations. I know that the roughness of the trails caused some of the club members to not attend this ride, but it will surely be one of my favorite memories of the season (once my kidneys are healed up from the bouncing.... lol).
